Determination of the fiber volume content of fiber-reinforced plastics by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)

| Resumen: | This document specifies three methods for determining the fibre and matrix mass of cured laminates containing carbon fibres separately or as a mixture with glass fibres. Method A under nitrogen atmosphere is additionally suitable for modified resin systems with mineral filler contents by determining the specific correction factor for the matrix. If the resin system is not available separately, as when using pre-impregnated prepregs, or if the glass fibre content is to be determined separately, method B under air atmosphere is suitable, which does not include correction factors for the matrix in the calculation. Method C (Macro TGA) is suitable for laminates with thermoset matrix, especially for coarser laminates with blends of glass and carbon fibres which are not filled with mineral particles. The thermogravimetric analysers (TGA) to be used according to this document designate test devices which are suitable for small sample weights up to a maximum possible sample weight of 1 g to 5 g and have a mass resolution of 0.1 µg to 1 µg, or 0.1 mg in the case of macro TGA. |
